Across healthcare, the goal of research is simple: to determine the best methods of treatment for particular conditions in order to achieve the best possible outcome. In other words, what treatment is effective for X, Y or Z? Well, chiropractic care is making great progress in the research world for the management of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, from prevention to acute injury treatment.

One recent study showed that of two groups of patients: one who received medication, and the other who received chiropractic manipulation, there was a notable difference in how successful the two treatments were after 4 weeks of injury. As you can see, the vast majority (94%) of patients in the chiropractic group had reduced pain after treatment, while only 56% of the medication...

Let's talk a bit more about different sources of pain. As mentioned in Part 1, our nervous system translates many sources of pain differently depending on the origin (read part 1 here). This is extremely helpful, because it helps us as Chiropractors identify the cause of the pain, so we can address it at the source and eliminate the pain. This is what makes our treatment so unique. Throughout this series we will discuss different types of pain and how we treat them.

Let's take nerve pain for example. If you have never experienced the sharp, shooting, "electric shock" type of pain sometimes accompanied by numbness, burning, or even weakness, consider yourself lucky! Nerve pain typically causes radiating patterns away from the site of irritation, either down the arm,...

As Chiropractors, most patients begin their journey to our office for one reason: pain. Pain is no fun! Not surprisingly, the issue is very frequently pain generating from the spine and back. In fact, research population based studies have found that 80% of Americans will experience severe low back pain at least once in their life. At the same time, it's not unusual for us to find that there is more going on than back pain. For example, we once had a woman come to our office with very severe low back pain, who had a secondary complaint of acute lower right stomach discomfort. Based on our detailed differential evaluation, we immediately had her sent to the hospital. She was having appendicitis, and immediately went in for surgical removal of the appendix. Another time...

Women all too often accept back pain as an inevitable part of a pregnancy. We are here to tell you that it does not have to be! Chiropractic care is an effective, drug-free method of relieving pain caused by the increased pressure on the spine during pregancy. And most importantly- it is very gentle and safe for both mother and baby.

Think about the changes in a woman's body as she goes through pregancy- specifically her center of gravity and the way she walks. As her pregnancy progresses to the second and third trimesters, more and more pressure is placed on the lower back. She also is producing hormones that are slowly causing the ligaments of her pelvis to relax in preperation for delivery. These shifts in the low back and pelvis can at times place pressure on the ne...
